Week 4 Preparation

Objective: Plan project and advance on experiment details

Author: Beverly Tomita

Date: April 21, 2014

Today

  • Make progress on the lab experiment details
    • Materials list
    • Basic procedure
    • Brief table of data to be collected

For lab this week:

Week 3 Lab

Objective: Get adviser approval and work on project

Author: Beverly Tomita

Date: April 17, 2014

Today in lab
  • Get topic and goals approved
  • Work on possible lab procedures to testing absorbency of various hair types
    • Collect different hair and fur types
    • Test in water and in motor oil and water mixture
    • Record and compare amount of time needed to effectively absorb possible pollutants

Week 3 Prep

Objective: Decide on problem and start on Design Proposal (due Thursday)

Author: Beverly Tomita

Date: April 14, 2014

Today:

  • Final decision: Our problem is going to get hairy!
  • Possible deliverables (emailing advisor to confirm validity and feasibility):
    • Small prototype of netted hair structure
    • Creo 3-D model
    • MATLAB simulation of release and collection of product (will research ocean currents, seasonal changes, tracking devices, etc)
For next time:
  • Complete individual proposal parts by Wednesday at noon
  • Update biographies with photo and brief description by Wednesday at noon
  • Turn in Design Proposal before lab on Thursday

Thursday, April 10, 2014

Week 2 Lab

Week 2 Objective: Discuss the two potential problems and split up the Design Proposal (due next week)

Author: Beverly Tomita

Date: April 10, 2014

Today in lab:
Problem: Drunk Driving
Goal: Reduce drunk driving

1) Combine breathalyzer with key - two part start system a) OH check b) allow start

2) Integrate breathalyzer with steering wheel

3) Breathalyzer lock on door

Possible idea to build on: French law on breathalyzer requirement

http://www.gizmag.com/france-breathalyzer-legislation/21541/

ADVANTAGES
* Interesting topic
* Learn about cars and mechanics behind its function
* Directly benefits people
* Appeal to audience

DISADVANTAGES
* Our group consists of only first year students (mostly biomed)
* Lack of experience and thorough knowledge
* Lack of resources (i.e. test cars)
* Time constraint for the large scale project

Problem: We drop hair
Goal: Recycle hair and make something useful
1)      Hair de-pollution blob
2)      Insulator (traps heat)
3)      Wings (feather keratin)
4)      Amor (reptile scale keratin)

ADVANTAGES
* Hair and its properties are already well-researched
* Simple task (and is related to our majors)
* Easy to research - use Drexel libraries, etc.
* Easy to test - collect hair from dorms or a nearby salon (like Saturn Club)

DISADVANTAGES
* May be gross
* Less audience appeal
* Simple project

For next meeting (next Monday at 5:30pm in Hagerty):
  • Each member brings some research and a vote on Drunk Driving vs. Hair Recycling
  • Decide on the problem + goal
  • Finish design proposal

Week 2 Prep

Week 2 Lab Preparation

Objective: Discuss potential project problems, goals, and possible solutions

Author: Beverly Tomita

Date: April 7, 2014, 5:30pm

Location: Hagerty Library - basement

Potential project problems/ goals and possible solutions numbered (if any):

IDEA 1
Problem: We drop hair, lots of it. And it’s gross
Goal: Recycle it or do something useful
1)      Hair de-pollution blob
2)      Insulator (traps heat)
3)      Wings (feather keratin)
4)      Amor (reptile scale keratin)

IDEA 2
Problem: Aging (due to pollution, etc)
Goal: Detox and maintain youthful health
1) Sleep in a pomegranate, waterbed-type
2) Lotion

IDEA 3
Problem: Recycle bins that actually work
Goal: Help people recycle right

IDEA 4
Problem: Humans can’t climb well
Goal: Gecko climbers!
% already being researched… so maybe not

IDEA 5
Problem: Drunk Driving
Goal: Stop/ decrease drunk driving
1) Check BAL before start car ***
2)      Unlock wheels by blowing on them (BAL)
3)      Force driver to be not drunk somehow…

IDEA 6
Problem: In case of black out, wired charging is inconvenient
Goal: Wireless charging for medical devices

% maybe not feasible in 10 weeks

For next lab Thursday:

  • Ask professor and/ or TAs about our two top ideas
  • Clarify feasibility of each
  • Decide on which problem to use and make decision matrix on specific project for this course
